Why isn't Java used for modern web application development?

As an experienced programmer, I am finding it difficult to understand why the hate toward Java for modern web applications?Especially startups today aren't opting for Java.

1. Is it an unfair stereotype of Java because it's been around so long.
2. Are applications written in other languages really faster to build, easier to maintain, and do they perform better?
3. Is Java only used by big companies who are too slow to adapt to a new language?
