Which one you will prefer HTML5 semantic elements like article, header, footer etc or your old friend "div"?

I am reading a book in HTML5 standard and I don't have any prior knowledge of previous standard. So Frontend developer give any respect to the w3 recommendations or just follow their own sets of rules.

Also does Frontend developer makes any changes after the announcement of HTML5 recommendation on how should a document be structured.
