The term 'boot camp' in tech is an intensive, short-term training given to students or interns in their relative fields. It is aimed at helping the interns level up their skills in their respective fields with the ultimate goal of being employable.

Expectations in this setting is a two way traffic game. There are some that are placed on the interns themselves and some placed on the bootcamp program itself.

On expectations on the part of the interns, they are challenged to tap into their creative force. They should know that in web development, learning never stops as the industry is an ever evolving one. They are expected to work hard and put in their shift in order to make the learning process a blissful one. They need to be patient, determined and persistent in order to succeed in the internship. Their mantra should be

Learning never stops.

On the part of the bootcamp program, resources are expected to be made available to the interns so as to aid their learning journey. The purpose of the bootcamp program should be to guide the interns through the noise, focus on real-world engineering tasks and skills, help them build networks and community, and take them out of their daily norm so they can progress as rapidly as possible. The bootcamp program is expected to teach the interns fundamentals, and instill the will within them to overcome unknown hurdles and challenges - both in job searching and working.

Time should also be spent on mock interviews to get the interns ready for the industry. They should be taught necessary technical skills but most importantly core / soft skills that will enable them to stand out in the industry. Emphasis should be put on learning, building their skill sets and increasing their value to prospective companies.

As the tech industry is growing at a fast pace and new innovations keeps coming out, the onus falls on the interns to grow and keep up with the ever evolving industry.

Have a happy week!
