Should product designers learn to code? If yes, how do you see them contributing to dev teams?

I came to product through frontend development and see design as a simulation of experiences. Given that current design tools produce static or uncoded mockups, designers could be more involved in product teams. What are ways that designers could contribute or assist developers by learning to code? eg. interaction prototypes, staging builds, production QA…
