This is a documentation of the side hustle portfolio bootcamp task for week one. We were assigned the task of redesigning the mobile application app of a Nigerian bank/Fintech of our choice. Though the task was stressful as some of the members of the team were not responding, we were able to pull through.

After much deliberation, meetings and finally conducting a user research through questionnaires, we decided to work on the United Bank for Africa's(UBA) mobile bank app.

ABOUT UBA

United Bank for Africa popularly known as UBA is a Nigerian pan-African financial services group headquartered in Lagos. It has 70 years of providing uninterrupted banking operations, superior financial services to small businesses, corporations, governments, institutions, and individuals globally.

Using the UBA mobile banking app, customers can successfully and conveniently carry out banking transactions such as money transfers, checking account balance, airtime and data top-up, bills payment, loans, request, foreign exchange transfers and many more. This means customers do not necessarily need to visit the bank to carry out these banking services, which makes it easier for the bank and its customers to transact business.

Putting the above into consideration, we decided that the UBA mobile banking app needed to have a more user-centric interface so that users would enjoy their experience on the app. That is the basis of this project.

USER RESEARCH

We carried out a research by sending out a survey to users to find out which bank/fintech’s mobile app they’ve had issues with. This informed our choice of picking UBA. From the research, we could pick out some of the users pain points and frustrations.

PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION

From the research result and from feedback gotten from members of the team, we pointed out some of the issues with the UBA mobile application. They include:

  1. No splash screen
  2. Irrelevant login interface
  3. Absence of the Virtual card feature
  4. Unnecessary Lifestyle feature

SOLUTION

To solve these issues, the team decided to

  1. Add a splash screen
  2. Redesign the login interface
  3. Add a virtual card feature, and,
  4. Remove the lifestyle feature.

CONCLUSION

Overall, it was a nice start for the team. We divided the tasks according to each person's strength and we were able to meet the deadline and come up with this. I believe the team would get better as we progress in the bootcamp.
