How do you promote your side project?

A lot of web devs have their own little side project. Once you're at a specific point in your development, you are ready to get it out there for the masses to enjoy.

How have you introduced the world to what you have to offer? I'm looking for specific instances of how you "spread the gospel" about your side project and not general marketing tips.

As an example, I would love to know how Hashnode built up its community, as I find this kind of stuff fascinating :-D
