I'd like to stress the point you made under "But I'm not a genius programmer...". I've been coding professionally for 30 years and have a lot of open source code out there. I appreciate every contributor who makes the effort even if it's just to file an issue. This is true for all my friends.

About your suggestion, I think there's a lot of good content out there already on Hacktoberfest. I don't write generally until I have a new perspective on a topic or something of value that doesn't already exists.
